Methodology

Monoprep Preparation/Cytologic Examination
Useful for identifying normal or malignant cells and to aid in the diagnosis of inflammatory conditions caused by infection or drug reactions.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Fresh, second-morning urine

Container/Tube: Plastic urine container

Specimen Volume: 30-50 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. First-morning specimen should be discarded. An optimum specimen is collected later in day after good hydration (3-5 glasses of clear fluid).

2. Begin to urinate into toilet.
3. After first few teaspoons, place container under stream of urine and collect rest of urine in container.

4. After finishing, tighten cap securely, and wash any spilled urine from outside of container.
5. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number or date of birth, date of collection, specimen source, and name of ordering provider.
Forms: Order in EPIC or, if from clinic, complete an Anatomic Pathology Request Form supplied by Pathology Laboratory. Include patient’s name, date of birth, date of collection, provider's name, hospital identification number (in- or out-patient) or address, specimen source, and pertinent clinical history.
