Methodology
Microscopic Evaluation
Bone marrow biopsy and bone marrow aspirate evaluation including iron special staining. Additional charges may be added for immunohistochemical staining to aid in the diagnosis (organisms, leukemia subtyping, etc.).

Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Bone marrow aspirate, peripheral blood smears, and Bone Marrow core
Container/Tube:Aspirate: Clean, glass slides and small vial containing EDTA supplied by the Hematology
Container/Tube: Core: Specimen vial containing 10% buffered formalin supplied by the Hematology Laboratory.
Specimen Volume: Entire collection
Collection Instructions:
1. Bone marrow aspirate and peripheral blood smears should be made on clean, glass slides.
2. After making bone marrow aspirate smears, place remainder of aspirate in small vial containing EDTA. Mix thoroughly by inversion.
3. Once core is obtainined, roll gently on glass slides (make up to 6 slides). After slides are made, place core in 10% buffered formalin.
4. Label aspirate,core, slides with patient's name, medical record number and source of sample (right/left, aspirate, core, peripheral).
Additional Information:
1. A pathology/diagnostic report and a brief history/diagnosis are required.
2. When a complete bone marrow aspirate/biopsy evaluation is requested, aspirated bone marrow particles and cell block/clot are examined.
