Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Venous cord blood

Container/Tube:  Heparinized syringe

Note:  Samples cannot be collected in microtainers.  No capillary blood samples.

Collection Instructions:

1.  Avoid exposure of specimen to atmosphere.

2. Hand deliver sample to CCLS lab.  Do not send in tube station.

pH: 7.30-7.40 units
Critical values (automatic call-back): ≤7.25 units or ≥7.60 units


pCO2: 33.9-48.3 mm Hg
Critical values (automatic call-back): ≤20 mm Hg or ≥70 mm Hg


pO2:  22.8-34.6 mm Hg
Critical value (automatic call-back): <30   or > 40 mm Hg


HCO3: 23-28 mmol/L
Critical values (automatic call-back): ≤14 mmol/L or ≥40 mmol/L

 

Base excess: -2.0 to 3.0 mmol/L
% O2 saturation: 60-80%
