Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Vaginal discharge

Container/Tube: Amnisure Collection Kit

Collection Instructions:

1. Nurse provider collects sample of vaginal secretions using sterile vaginal swab in collection kit.

2. Provider collects sample from surface of vagina, holding swab in the middle of the stick while patient lying flat on back.

3. Provider carefully inserts polyester tip of swab into the vagina until fingers contact the skin no more than 2 to 3 inches.

4. Provider withdraws swab after 1 minute.

5. Provider rinses swab after collection in solvent vial for 1 minute.

6. Provider labels specimen with source, patient name, medical record number and date and time of collection.

 

 

 

Specimen Transport Temperature

Room temperature up to 30 minutes, ice water for up to 8 hours

Reference Values

Negative: No fetal membrane rupture

Positive: Fetal membrane rupture
