Methodology

NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test)

The following viruses are in the panel:  Adenovirus, Human Metapneumovirus, Influenza A, Influenza A (subtype H1), Influenza A (subtype H3), Influenza B, Parainfluenza 1, Parainfluenza 2, Parainfluenza 3, Parainfluenza 4, Respiratory Syncytial Virus A, Respiratory Syncytial Virus B, and Rhinovirus.  The following bacteria are in the panel:  Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis/bronchiseptica and Bordetella holmesii.

Note:  This panel is only for inpatient pediatric patients

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type:  Nasopharyngeal swab

Container/Tube: Universal Transport Medium (Red cap)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL only

Collection Instructions:

1. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

2. Collect a nasopharyngeal specimen using a flexible flocked swab provided in Universal Transport Collection System.

3.Break off nasopharyngeal swab in the Universal Transport Medium (red cap) for transport.

4. The specimen is stable for 48 hours refrigerated at 2-80C in viral transport media.

5. Individually bag specimens for transportation to reduce contamination risk.

NOTE:  All specimens not collected in 1 ml VTM will be rejected.
