Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preferred

Specimen Type: Fresh stool; unformed, soft, or liquid

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: A minimum of 2 mL (pea sized amount of raw stool)

Collection Instructions:

1. Label specimen appropriately (fresh stool).

2. Formed stool is not acceptable.

 

Alternate

Specimen Type: Preserved fresh stool; unformed, soft, or liquid

Container/Tube: Sterile container with Cary-Blair transport media. Acceptable for patients > 2 years of age

Specimen Volume: A minimum of 2 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Label specimen appropriately (preserved stool).

2. Formed stool is not acceptable.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient 24 hours/refrigerated 5 days
