Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) utilizing the Cepheid GeneXpert Dx System

Detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) DNA directly from nasal swabs in patients at risk for nasal colonization.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Specimen Type: nares

Container/Tube: Cepheid SampleCollection Device - rayon dual swab (900-0370) (preferred)

Specimen Volume: Swab

Collection Instructions:

1. Keep both swabs attached to the red cap at all times.

2. Holding the swab cap, sample each nare, one at a time.

3. Place the dual swab specimens into the transport tube containing liquid Stuart medium.

4. Label transport tube with the patient's name (first and Last), medical record number, date, time of collection, and type of specimen.

5. If specimen will be tested within 24 hours, store at 15-30oC. If >24 hours between collection and testing, refrigerate specimens until testing can be performed. Specimens stored at 2-8oC are stable for up to 7 days.

Container/Tube: liquid Amies elution swab (ESwab) (BD 220245)

Specimen Volume: Swab

Collection Instructions:

1. Open the BD ESwab sample collection pouch and remove tube and swab.

2. Holding the top of the swab, sample both nares one at a time with the same swab.

3. Unscrew and remove the cap from the BD ESwab tube making sure not to spill the medium.

4. Insert the swab into the tube until the red marked breaking point is at the level of the tube opening.

5. Break the swab at the breaking point and replace the cap on the tube and secure tightly.

6. Label transport tube with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number, date, time of collection, and type of specimen.

7. If specimen will be tested within 24 hours, store at 15-30oC. If >24 hours between collection and testing, refrigerate specimens until testing can be performed. Specimens stored at 2-8oC are stable for up to 7 days.
