Methodology

A smear of maternal blood is subjected to acid treatment. Fetal cells resist acid elution which allows them to take up stain and be counted.

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 5 mL

Additional Information: Circumstances of specimen (pre or post), amniocentesis, abdominal trauma to pregnant patient >20 weeks gestation, or post-delivery are required.

Reference Values

Estimated fetal-maternal hemorrhage (FMH): <15 mL
If FMH is >15 mL, the pathologist will add an interpretation.
