Methodology

Known Rh-positive cells form rosettes around Rh-positive fetal cells in specimen from mother. This test screens for fetomaternal hemorrhage in Rh-negative mothers delivering Rh-positive child/fetus.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must be drawn post delivery or post immunizing event in an Rh negative patient >20 weeks gestation.

 

Tested within 2 days of immunizing event

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 5 mL

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient or refrigerated

Reference Values

Negative indicates fetomaternal hemorrhage of <15 mL

 

Critical Value: (Automatic call-back)

Positive Result. 

 

If positive,  Kleihauer-Betke Smear for Quantification of Fetal-Maternal Hemorrhage, Blood, test code LAB0220772, will be performed at an additional charge.
