Specimen Requirements

 

 

Patient Preparation: Proton pump inhibitors and bismuth compounds should be avoided for 2 weeks prior to testing; antibiotics should be avoided for 4 weeks prior to testing,

Supplies: Sterile specimen container

Specimen Type:  Unpreserved stool

Container/Tube: Sterile specimen container

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect fresh fecal specimen and submit 2 grams or 1 mL in sterile specimen container with airtight lid.

2. Place container in a sealed biohazard bag and send refrigerated or frozen.

Reject preserved stool specimens, stools in transport media, or on swabs as well as colonoscopy and colostomy specimens.

 

 

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated (preferred):  72 hours

Frozen(-200 C):  14 days
