Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube:

Preferred:  Serum (Gold/SST or plain red top)

Acceptable:  Plasma from Sodium Heparin, Lithium Heparin, Potassium EDTA. For consistency, using the same specimen matrix for individual patients is a good practice.

Collection Instructions:  Must foil wrap to protect for light.

Specimen Volume: 1.0 mL

Specimen Transport Temperature

Specimens may be stored up to two weeks at 2 to 8o C. If testing will be delayed, specimens may be stored frozen (< -10o C). Foil wrap specimen and protect from light.

Reference Values

Therapeutic Limit:  0.02 uMoles/L

Critical Value - High: > 0.90 uMoles/L
