Methodology

Conventional Culture Technique

To determine the quantity of aerobic and anaerobic gram negative bacilli and yeast in the upper small bowel.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must be received in the laboratory within 2 hours of collection.

 

Specimen source is required.

 

Acceptable Specimens:  Duodenal aspirate, jejunum aspirates, or small bowel aspirates

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Duodenal aspirate

Container/Tube: Syringe, sterile container, anaerobic specimen collection device

Specimen volume: ≥1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Aseptically collect specimen by aspiration.

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

3. Swab is not acceptable.

 

Specimen Type: Jejunum aspirates

Container/Tube: Syringe, sterile container, anaerobic specimen collection device

Specimen Volume: ≥ 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Aseptically collect specimen by aspiration.

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

3. Swab is not acceptable.

 

Specimen Type: Small bowel aspirates

Container/Tube: Syringe, sterile container, anaerobic specimen collection device

Specimen voulme: ≥1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Aseptically collect specimen by aspiration.

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

3. Swab is not acceptable.
