Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube:

Preferred:  Green top (Lithium heparin/PST)
Acceptable: Serum (Red top, Gold/SST), Na Heparin plasma (label specimen appropriately).

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Minimum Volume: 0.25 ml

Collection Instructions:

1. Separate from red cells within 1 hour of collection.     

     a. Serum/plasma gel tubes should be centrifuged within 1 hour of collection.

     b. Non-gel serum/plasma tubes should be centrifuged and aliquoted within 1 hour of collection.

2. Avoid hemolysis.

Reference Values

0-7 days: 3.2-5.5 mmol/L

7-30 days: 3.4-5.9 mmol/L

1-6 months: 3.5-5.6 mmol/L

6-12 months: 3.5-5.9 mmol/L

>1 year: 3.5-5.1 mmol/L

Critical values (automatic call-back): ≤3.0 mmol/L or ≥6.0 mmol/L

KDU Patients: ≤3.0 mmol/L or ≥6.5 mmol/L
