Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Nasopharyngeal wash or nasopharyngeal swab from Universal Viral Transport Medium
Container/Tube: Universal Viral Transport Medium (red cap)
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Label container with patient’s name (first and last),
medical record number, date and actual time of collection, and type
of specimen.
2. Collect nasopharyngeal wash using proper technique (or) collect
a nasopharyngeal swab using a flexible flocked swab provided in
Universal Viral Transport Collection System.
3. Place wash in Universal Viral Transport Collection Medium (red cap) or break off nasopharyngeal swab in the Universal Viral Transport Medium (red cap) for transport.
4. The specimen is stable for 24 hours at 2-25oC in Universal Viral Transport Collection Medium.
