Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube:

Preferred:Green top (Lithium heparin/ PST)

Acceptable: Serum (Red top, Gold/SST),  Na Heparin plasma (label specimen appropriately)

Specimen Volume:0.5 mL

Minimum volume: 0.25 ml

Collection Instructions:

1. Fasting (4-hour minimum fast with water).

2. Spin down and remove plasma from cells within 1 hour of draw.

Reference Values

0-1 day: 45-110 mg/dL

1-8 days: 47-110 mg/dL

>8 days: 70-100 mg/dL

Critical values (automatic call-back)

Neonatal: ≤40 mg/dL or ≥300 mg/dL

Adults: ≤50 mg/dL or ≥400 mg/dL

KDU patients: < 40 or > 600 mg/dl
