CALCULATED VLDL AND LDL
The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends the following formulas for the calculation of VLDL and LDL:
VLDL = triglycerides divided by 5
There is no recommended reference range.
LDL = total cholesterol minus HDL minus VLDL
This calculation is valid only if:
A. Total triglycerides do not exceed 400 mg/dL
B. No chylomicrons are present in serum
C. Patient has been fasting for 12 to 14 hours
This formula-based calculation may not be valid in the pediatric
age group. In these cases, the ultracentrifugation method must be
used to measure these fractions.
See individual test listings for other reference values.
NOTE: If the triglycerides are > 400 mg/dL, the Direct LDL (DLDL) will be performed.
