Specimen Requirements

Indicate specimen source on specimen container and request form.

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Specimen type: Pericardial, peritoneal, pleural fluid, or Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen volume: 1 mL

Minimum volume: 0.5 mL

Specimen type: Pericardial, peritoneal, pleural fluid, or Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen volume: 1 mL

Minimum volume: 0.5 mL

NOTES:

• Synovial Fluid has its own order code (LAB0204289)
• BAL fluids will only have the red blood cell count and nucleated cell count performed. A nucleated cell differential will not be performed and will remain part of the Non-Gynecologic Cytology Exam (LAB1013).
