Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Green top (Lithium heparin & PST)

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.25 mL

Collection Instructions: Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Gold top (SST) & Red top (Serum & No Additive)

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.25 mL

Collection Instructions: Label specimen appropriately (serum).

If collecting using a red top with no gel separator, the serum must be removed within 1 hour of collection.

 

Note: If hemoloysis is present, specimen will need to be recollected.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated: 7 days

Frozen: 7 days

Reference Values

0-8 days: 7.5-11.5 mg/dL

8-31 days: 8.3-11.8 mg/dL

31-90 days: 8.2-11.4 mg/dL

91-180 days: 8.0-11.5 mg/dL

181 days-1 year: 7.9-11.1 mg/dL

1-4 years: 8.4-9.9 mg/dL

4-12 years: 8.5-10.1 mg/dL

12-14 years: 8.5-10.7 mg/dL

14-16 years: 8.9-10.8 mg/dL

16-18 years: 8.6-10.8 mg/dL

>19 years: 8.6-10.5 mg/dL

 

Critical values (automatic call-back): ≤7.0 mg/dL or ≥12.0 mg/dL

KDU Adult:  <6.5 mg/dL or >13.0 mg/dL
