Specimen Requirements

Specimen source is required. Specify biopsy, brush, BAL , trachea aspirate or wash.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type:  Bronchial brushing, Bronchoalveolar lavage

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: 10 mL

Collection Instructions: A bronchial (lower airway) sample is collected during a bronchoscopy. During a bronchoscopy, bronchial cells and secretions may be collected using 1 or more of several different methods.

 

Specimen Type:  Bronchial biopsy

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume:  Tissue

Collection Instructions: Place tissue biopsy in gauze moistened with sterile saline.

 

Specimen Type:  Tracheal aspirate

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: Entire collection

Collection Instructions:  Place aspirated specimen in sterile container and deliver to lab within one hour.

 

Unacceptable Conditions: 

1. Nonsterile or leaking containers

2. Aerobic culture on non-selective media: selective media if appropriate

3. Lavage is contraindicated in suspected tuberculosis
